Zoo

This week, we are having some fun at the zoo, even though it feels like everyday here is a ZOO!  :)  The children always love talking about the different animals that we might see at the zoo.  Of course, a LOT of them have stories to tell about trips to the zoo that they've made!  We had some great art projects this week with giraffes, monkeys, tigers, snakes- OH MY!

The children came up with lots of animals that they might see at the zoo.  Then, they took it one step further to sort out which ones live on the land versus those that live in the water.  They also came up with some that live in both!

Our 2 year old class compared stripes and spots that we might see on an animal! 

Since our letter of the week is "n", the children made Nachos like you might get to enjoy at the Zoo!  I even had to sneak a few bites- they were delicious!

Continuing to work on our letter of the week, some classrooms made "n is for net" while one classroom made theirs for night!

Space

We're headed to outer space this week!!  We always have so much fun during this theme and the children learn so much!  While we do a LOT of science this week!  We still pull in our other academic areas.  For Language Arts, the children made rockets using the letters of their name to practice how to spell them.

We talked about the phases of the moon as well.  One classroom made this neat diagram in their room and also used Oreo cookies to demonstrate it as well! YUM!

It's not Space week without learning about our planets.  Every classroom made their own representation from displays on their bulletin board to class mobiles.  The Waddlers came up with their own solar system where each planet was named after a child!  We also did a school wide Solar System where each classroom decorated a planet for us to hang in our hallway. 

For our letter of the week, some classrooms did "m is for monkey" but one classroom used that time to also talk about constellations by making the letter m using stars!

Happy Earth Day!

We are getting ready for Earth Day!  To start off, we talked about Earth and what is looks like.  The children had fun making their very own!  I always love projects like this because as you can see, EVERY classroom made theirs in a different way!  It's so neat to see all the creativity!

Of course throughout the week, we learned about how to take care of our Earth.  Pre-K learned about the "3 R's"- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  Even our 2 year old class did a sorting activity to determine which items we can reuse and which ones we should recycle.

"The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss is a great story for children when we are talking about taking care of Earth and making sure it is not polluted.  One class did an art project to go along with the story.

While recycling is important, at Sunflower Station Preschool, we are big on REUSING!  After all, "one man's trash is a teacher's treasure!"  The children made some recycled art by using shredded up paper to make a tree, circle (our shape of the week) containers and lids to decorate a fish, and odds and ends to make little creatures out of toilet paper rolls.

We also had some great sensory activities going on this week from planting flowers to making oceans in a bottle! 

What a great message for our little guys to take away from this week!  Even though they may be small, there is still a lot that we can all do with just our two hands!

Circles are our shape of the week!  One classroom made a circle collage, including part of their morning snack- a cheerio!

For the letter of the week, several classrooms made "l is for ladybug" and one classroom made their own lollipops!

Plants & Flowers

As the weather is warming up, it's time to learn about plants & flowers!  The children made their own flower artwork and one classroom took it one step further by writing the numbers on their petals up to our number of the week and then gluing them on their flower in the correct order! 

I love how these turned out!  This class used pattern blocks and paint to create beautiful artwork of flowers!

We learned about the parts of a flower this week and practiced identifying them!  The children also talked about the different plants that we eat and where they grow.

To work on rhyming words, the Pre-K classroom created these adorable flowers with rhyming words as the leaves!

One classroom divided into groups and each worked on a piece of a project they made to go on the wall.  Each group had a different task of making the soil, creating the flowers, making the water drops, and then of course the watering can!  It's so neat to see them all work together on a project!

Our letter of the week was "k" and we are definitely in the mood for Spring with all the kites!  It was neat to see how the classrooms did their kites in different ways!
