Happy St. Patrick's Day!

It's time for some green at Sunflower Station Preschool!  We were on the lookout for a leprechaun but never did see one!  However, some of our children sure did look like some cute leprechauns!

We also spent a lot of time talking about shamrocks this week.  The children learned about symmetry by folding shamrocks in half.  They also practiced with shapes by making a shamrock out of hearts and a rectangle.

The children also learned about rainbows.  They did an experiment to see how rainbows are formed.   

For the cooking project, they made Green Fruit Salad using grapes, kiwi, and green apples!

 We can't forget our letter of week!  Some classes made "rainbow Fish" to continue talking about rainbows.  Others made green Frogs to work with our color of the week- green!

 Happy St. Patrick's Day!  We hope you wore some green so you didn't get pinched!

Dr. Seuss

We spent the week talking about Dr. Seuss this week!  His stories are so wonderful and the children really enjoy them!  We of course did some wacky things this week in honor of Dr. Seuss!  The Pre-K class wore silly hats, had opposite day, and pajama day!

We really got in the spirit of things by making Dr. Seuss hats and making a fun version of Green Eggs and Ham for our cooking project!

The children also talked about things that go along with Dr. Seuss' books.  After reading "One Fish, Two Fish", they estimated how many goldfish were in a container.  They also read "The Cat in the Hat" and practiced balancing in many different ways.  For some math pracitice, they measured with their own feet after reading "The Foot Book". 

Our letter of the week was "e".  The children did several different art projects for the letter of the week!

Dental Week

February is National Dental Month so we finished up the month by learning about our teeth!  To start off, Dr. Barnes (a dentist in Huntsville) came to visit us and told us some neat facts!  Everyone even got a toothbrush to take home with them!  We were so thankful that he was willing to come spend some time with us and help us better understand how to take care of our teeth correctly.

To keep things going, the children made giant toothbrushes to make practicing brushing our teeth really fun!  They also talked about long to brush their teeth each time they brush.  Some decided to sing "Happy Birthday" in their heads as they brushed!

For our cooking project, we had some fun with apples!  After all, "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away"!  Using apples and marshmallows, they made some really cute smiles to go with their own precious smiles!

This week, "D is for Dinosaur"!  Dr. Barnes even showed us a video about a dinosaur named Dudley who takes a trip to the dentist. 

To wrap up the week, one of our moms who is currently studying to be a dental hygentist came to talk with us.  She had so many neat activities for the children to participate in and even had Mr. Tooth come visit us!  The children got to brush "sugar bugs" off of a tooth, pretend to floss with a jump rope, and give Mr. Tooth a big squeeze!  Everyone had so much fun and learned a lot too!

President's Day

This week the children learned about why we celebrate President's Day and why our Presidents are so very important.  They talked about some unique things about our most famous Presidents like George Washington and the cherry tree and also Abraham Lincoln's log cabins and top hat.



They also spent some time talking about money because after all, that's a great place to see pictures of some of our Presidents.  The Pre-K children did a "Lincoln Toss" where they flipped a penny and made a chart to show if the penny landed on heads or tails.  Other classrooms took some coins and sorted them by size, color, and by the actual coin.

They also did an experiment by cleaning the pennies.  It was interesting to see how much better the vinegar cleaned the pennies than just plain water!

We did several activities with the letter of the week as well- C!  Some classes made "C is for Cat" and others made "C is for Chamelon".  The children also made Cherry Coke Salad for their cooking project!

 We hope you had a great President's Day and remembered those that have done so much for our country!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sunflower Station Preschool was full of love this week as we talked about Valentine's Day and friendship!  The children did precious crafts to give to their parents as Valentines.

 We also enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of Valentine's Day parties!  The children exchanged Valentines, had wonderful treats and sweets, and played some games!

Black History

This week, we took the time to learn about African Americans that helped to make our world a better place.  The children learned about several different inventions that were made and how important they are to society. 

George Washington Carver found many uses
for peanuts and made peanut butter!

Garrett Morgan invented the traffic light to keep us safe when driving.

 We also spent some time talking about how we should all be friends and work together.  The children created a beautiful wreath of hands to symbolize this.

Happy Groundhog's Day!

Oh no- six more weeks of winter!  We are so sad that the groundhog saw his shadow but we did have a lot of fun learning about groundhogs and shadows this week.  We actually have a groundhog that hangs around the building next door so we have gotten to see one up close and personal!
The children did so many neat activities this week that had to do with groundhogs.

They also learned a cute little song to sing as they played with it!

For dramatic play, they pretended to be groundhogs and hid in their "burrows".

 The letter this week was Z.  The children had some fun talking about Zebras!
